Blog 4 – My Letter to Louisa Gradgrind

My dearest Louisa,

I know you are disheartened; I understand the reasons as to why your confused and most of all I agree that all which has transpired is not as you wished or desired. But I urge you, dear Louisa, to find the courage, inquisitiveness, and curiosity you had when you were younger look beyond the here and now.

Look a life beyond what you can see and what we are taught. Most importantly stop reflecting the thoughts of others just because they were imposed upon you. Do not let them change your heart. Your thoughts and ideas are now and will forever be your own. This is the one thing they cannot take away from you.

Move away from your window and cease looking at a life which is only filled with factories and smog and industry. Let your mind take you to a place where the skies are blue, the air is crisp, the land is filled with flowers which flourish. If you could see and sense it, how would you describe it? Tell me, I would love to hear it.

Take a walk, Louisa, look around and dare to think freely. You are not the first woman who is dictated how to speak, think, and feel, and sadly I must say, you will not be the last. Although time cannot be reversed and what has been done, cannot be undone, I encourage you to voice your thoughts, share your feelings, care aloud, and wonder openly.

Dream and look toward a brighter tomorrow, listen, and learn all that life has to teach because after all, life is an experience which will always be your own.

Thinking of you always,
Nancy
